Refractive surgery

Refractive surgery changes the refraction power of the eye and is used to correct existing ametropia.

One has to differentiate between using laser to change refraction and the so-called lens surgery. During lens surgery the old lens is removed and replaced or an additional one is added.
For both tretaments, several techniques exsit. The lens surgery is used for high ametropia in comparison to laser correction.

Laser change refraction

  • Laser in-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
  • Photorefractive Keratektoy (PRK bzw. LASEK)

Lens surgery

Lens surgery is used for high ametropia.

  • Remove bodies lens and insert an artificial one or
  • Implantation of an artificial lens additional to the own one (Fixation prior, at or behind iris possible).

The kind of lens implantation depends on a personal conversation with the patient and will be decided on individual requirements.
